How to stop the loss of sand in Mijas beaches

Loss of sand on the beaches, damage to facilities and degradation of the coastline.

The citizen platform #SoydeMijas not only denounces and criticizes this situation, but also: investigates, proposes and promotes solutions:

After having held meetings with the Departments of Marine Biology and Zoology of the University of Malaga and the Department of Structural Mechanics and Hydraulic Engineering of the University of Granada, we propose:

1) Multiply between 8% and 12% the square meters of beach in the 16 km of coastline of our town.

2) Increase by 65% marine life along the entire coastline, both animal and plant.

3) Put an end to the waste of almost 3 million euros per year from the municipal coffers in the contribution of sand and repair of damage to the public infrastructures of the coast.

4) Promote the Mijas coastline as a unique tourist destination for nautical and underwater sports, and for the enjoyment of the marine environment at an international level.

HOW IT WILL BE DONE:

BUILDING A LINE OF DEFENSE AGAINST THE WAVES WITH MULTIFUNCTIONAL ARTIFICIAL REEFS IN THE WHOLE COASTLINE

These artificial reefs will stop the degradation of the beaches, produced by the effect of the waves and the gradual rise in sea level.

Placing them correctly in strategic places will guide the flow of marine sand rivers so that they deposit said sand on the beaches, increasing their surface area, as well as guaranteeing their renewal, cleanliness and quality.

It is estimated that thanks to this, marine life will increase by up to 35%, including posidonia and other plant life.

With the installation of the multi-function reefs, the number of fish in the area will turn our coastline into a breeding ground, which will benefit the entire Costa del Sol and which we will make profitable for our municipality with CONTROLLED AND SUSTAINABLE FISHING, which is going to be another form of create wealth for our town.

The Artificial Reef would allow the navigation of ships and their mooring at points enabled for this purpose, without the need to use anchors that damage the seabed.

Turning these mooring points into nurseries for fish and structures for fixing marine life. And also of observation and enjoyment of the same of divers and amateurs.

Also if Mijas does not have a port, it will become a destination for boats and yachts that will be able to offer their crew members and passengers, a unique point, to be able to anchor, enjoy marine life and sports, and the cuisine and services of the restoration of the coast of Mijas that will experience a rebirth and expansion never seen before.

HOW THE PROJECT WILL BE FUNDED:

EUROPEAN, NATIONAL, AND AUTONOMOUS FUNDS

There are funds for the protection of the coastline against climate change and rising sea levels. They are already being used in various parts of the Spanish, European and Andalusian coast, we just have to involve our universities, environmental organizations and technicians specialized in these issues, to create a coherent, feasible and solvent project. Know how to present it in the different organizations and defend it with interest and conviction.

PROFITABILITY FOR THE MUNICIPALITY

From #SoydeMijas all our proposals will always be aimed at their sustainability over time and of course produce economic and ecological benefits for the municipality and for all its inhabitants.

Therefore: moorings, fishing licenses, operating licenses for diving schools, underwater activities, marine taxis, floating restaurants, etc. They will produce a high economic return for our municipality and will serve to maintain the current structure and to promote new projects.
