If you are a foreigner, resident in MIJAS, vote in the municipal elections of 2023

In the upcoming municipal elections in May 2023, foreigners residing in MIJAS have an important opportunity to take part in the decisions of what is also their country, voting in them as full-fledged citizens.



Which foreign citizens can vote next May in the 2023 municipal elections?

Any person residing in Spain, of legal age (from 18 years of age) and with nationality of any member country of the European Union.

Also those people of legal age residing in Spain legally, for at least 5 years in a row (3 years if they are people born in Norway), with nationality of any of the countries that have agreements signed with Spain by which this right to vote is recognized.


Which countries, which are NOT from the European Union, are signed agreements with Spain to be able to vote in municipal elections?

Currently the countries outside the European Union with which Spain has agreements to recognize the right to vote of foreigners in our country are:

Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Korea, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay and

Trinidad and Tobago.


What must I do to be able to vote in these municipal elections?

If you are a citizen, of legal age, of a country of the European Union:

1º Be registered in your municipality of residence, through your Town Hall.

2º Express in writing your willingness to vote in the next municipal elections of May 2023.



Where to present and fill out this form or document?

If you have received notification from the Electoral Census Office (OCE) you can do so online or by regular mail.

If not, and in any case, you can present and fill in the formal declaration form (DFA model) available at the Town Hall where you live, that is, where you are registered.

Until when can I do this?

Entries in the municipal registers and formal declarations must be made until December 30, 2022.


If you are a citizen, of legal age, of a country outside the European Union, with agreements with Spain:

1º Be registered in your municipality of residence, through your Town Hall.

2º Have the residence authorization in Spain.

3º Express in writing your willingness to vote in the next municipal elections of May 2023.

Where to present and fill out this form or document?

If you have received notification from the Electoral Census Office (OCE) you can do so online or by regular mail.

If not, and in any case, you can present and fill in the formal declaration form at the Town Hall where you live, that is, where you are registered.


Remember that you will have to go to your Town Hall with your Foreigner Identity Card, plus a photocopy of it. If the time you reside in Spain cannot be deducted from your Foreigner Identity Card, you must submit a residence certificate that you will have to request at your nearest Police Station.

Until when can I do this?

If you meet these conditions, you can file the formal declaration from December 1, 2022 until January 15, 2023.
